Girdwood community members will celebrate the 10th anniversary of their Scott and Wesley Gerrish Library and Community Room Building on Saturday, May 19th. To commemorate the 10th birthday of the building, Gerrish Library Boosters, with the help of the Turnagain Arm Lions’ Club, will host a free BBQ and activities for the community from 12 to 2 p.m. that day—rain or shine.
Securing funding for this community asset was not easy. After several failed municipal propositions for a new library, a small group of Girdwood community members wrote grants and solicited funds to bring the needed building into reality. The Denali Commission, Rasmuson Foundation, State of Alaska, and Girdwood’s Crews family contributed significant portions of the funding. Other Girdwood families gave money and time as well.
Situated on municipal land, the library and the multi-purpose community room are heavily used and deeply appreciated by all in Girdwood and adjacent communities. Come celebrate with us, May 19!
